Like many other temples in Kerala, the origin of Akapparambu Sree Krishna Swamy Temple is unknown. The documents available and the architecture of the temple indicate that it was built more than 1000 years ago.
The main deity of the temple is "LORD SREE KRISHNA" in standing posture holding in his four hands (Chathurbahu) with Sangu, (conch shell), Chakra, Gadha (club) and Lotus. The idol was made with super granite (Holly Krishna sila).
The temple was originally built on the bank of river Periyar. The river, however, gradually shrunk its size and retreated and at present, it is about 5 KM away from the temple. His Highness JAGATH GURU SREE SANKARACHARYA had graced by visiting this in his childhood days prior to his 'SANYASAM' (asceticism). It is also believed that "VILLWAMANGALAM SWAMIGAL" had also visited the temple and offered prayers and poojas here.
When Tippu Sultan unleashed a reign of terror during his "padayottam", (military assault), this temple had become a safe sanctuary to a large number of devotees.
At that time it was administered by the Royal Kingdom. After the downfall of the kingdom, for many years the temple administration was in shamble without poojas or other spiritual rituals and slowly the temple fell into derelict condition, deserted by the local populace. Soon starvation, disease, violence, ill - health and other sufferings abounded in the surrounding villages, which was attributed as a curse for showing disrespect to the deity at the temple. It was at this juncture, a group of people voluntarily came forward to restore and renovate the temple so that the blessings of Lord Krishna would grace everyone.
On 27th March 1991 the temple was registered under the provisions of the Travancore - Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act, 1955 with Registration Number ER 227/91 and under the name of "AKAPPARAMBU SREE KRISHNASWAMY KSHETHRA SAMRAKSHANA SAMITHI.."
